DRD Tactical SUB-6 semi-automatic rifle: the best of both worlds
DRD Tactical announces the new SUB-6 semi-automatic rifle: a hybrid between the dependability of the AKM design and the accuracy and versatility of the AR-15 design, a "Jack of all trades" for hunting, sporting, defensive, and law enforcement uses, guaranteed to remain reliable even in the harshest conditions
New for 2022, DRD Tactical – an Otis Technology company specialized in breakdown modern semi-automatic rifles and personal defense weapons for civilian, law enforcement, and military customers – announces the launch of the DRD Tactical SUB-6 5.56x45mm caliber semi-automatic rifle: a hybrid design, engineered and manufactured to offer the best of the AKM platform in terms of reliability, even in the most difficult conditions, and the most sought-after qualities of the AR-15 in terms of user-friendliness, compatibility with accessories, and pinpoint accuracy.
Such a hybrid design is almost guaranteed to capture the attention of both civilian users – hunters, competition shooters, collectors, and simple citizens looking for a dependable survival, defensive and utility rifle – and law enforcement professionals, particularly local and State police forces in the United States, which nowadays often issue patrol rifles in lieu (or supplement) of the quintessential shotgun, while still limiting full-automatic or selective-fire weapons use to SWAT-like units only.
The DRD Tactical SUB-6 semi-automatic rifle aims at conquering the crowded modern sporting rifles market with a clever mix of excellent manufacturing, low weight (just under 6 lbs, or 2,7 kg, when unloaded – hence the name), a familiar manual of arms, and a proprietary direct impingement gas piston working system with a new dovetailed gas key bolt, featuring rail slots to eliminate BCG tilt and reduce friction for a smooth, efficient cycling that runs cleaner than standard AR systems.
The SUB-6 rifle also features a proprietary DRD Tactical 5-position manually-adjustable gas block.
The DRD Tactical SUB-6 rifle is built around a billet machined AR-15 type lower receiver with ambidextrous controls and a BAD ("Battery Assist Device")-style ambidextrous bolt catch.
The peculiar, patented working system does not require a recoil buffer and buffer tube; the SUB-6 comes from factory with a Picatinny interface attached directly to the rear portion of the lower receiver, and with a side-folding, extendable Magpul Zhukov-S type stock attached to it, which can be removed if so the shooter prefers. The rifle can be fired with the stock folded.
The upper receiver is also machined from solid lighteright aluminum alloy billet, pivots open just like an AR-15, and hosts a left-side mounted charging handle, a wide ejection window with a prominent brass deflector, a full-length top MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for optics, and a machined M-LOK handguard for accessories.
The DRD Tactical SUB-6 rifle features a cold hammer forged, 16.¼" (40,64 cm) barrel, with six right-handed grooves, a 1:7" twist rate, and an A2 flash hider on a 1/2x28 TPI thread at the muzzle.
The barrel extension on the DRD Tactical SUB-6 semi-automatic rifle provides better lockup utilizing a trunnion system composed of steel on steel vs. steel on aluminum which increases strength while reducing wear.
The SUB-6 is chambered from factory in 5.56x45mm, and feeds through STANAG 4179 (AR-15/M16/M4 compatible) magazines of any make, model, material, and capacity.
The receivers are however designed to be multicaliber, meaning that DRD Tactical will likely be able to launch variants of the SUB-6 in other calibers in the future.
The SUB-6 rifle comes from factory with a standard 4.5 lbs (2 kg) Combat-type trigger, and is compatible with all AR-15 pistol grips and accessories. As of today, the SUB-6 is available in a matte black hard-anodized version or in blue, ghost grey or sandstone Cerakote variants.
At present times, the DRD Tactical SUb-6 semi-automatic rifle is available only in the United States, as a Zander's Sporting Goods exclusive; the manufacturer's suggested retail price has been set at $2.350,00. No information concerning export availability or pricing has been released so far.
