The importance of budget-priced product in the market for shooting accessories can not be underestimated. Affordable firearms, optics, and accessories that offer acceptable quality levels and features aligned to the needs of the vast majority of shooters (to be clear: we are not talking about junk products, and not talking about Gucci-tier élite gear!) play a significant role in the preservation of our world.

In times of economic uncertainty, they allow shooters and hunters to remain active even when the budget they can dedicate to their sports and passions (and to the exercise of their rights) is necessarily slashed. At any given time, they also work as tools of inclusion to make shooting and hunting accessible to lower-income population brackets. This helps in keeping our community numerous, and with strength being in number, more resilient against political and regulatory threats that rear their ugly heads time and time again.

Additionally, this kind of product can play a significant role in equipping those professional operators – think private security or local law enforcement, particularly in the United States – who either have to procure their own gear entirely or in part, or want to equip themselves with something better than what comes issued from their department.

Starting in 2026, this wide array of products also includes the Mercury micro red dot sight, offered by Cosmic Tactical – a Texas-based company that has been known to our readers since 2025, when we reviewed their Saturn 2.0 4x32 tactical scope, an almost perfect competitor and counterpart to the legendary Trijicon ACOG for civilian sales and for local law enforcement.

Once again, the Mercury micro red dot sight is not exactly a "clone" of anything, but more so an equivalent – something inspired by a pre-existing product, but simplified to trim out the fat, making it economically affordable without sacrificing performance.

In its specific case, the Cosmic Tactical Mercury micro red dot sight is an equivalent of Trijicon's RMR Riggedized Miniature Reflex sight, first introduced in 2009 and since then risen to be one of the best selling products in its category, possibly the first truly modern micro red dot sight, manufactured in over one million samples as of early 2026.

Designed, assembled and tested entirely in the United States, with some imported components – the Company is very transparent about this, way more so than many direct competitors – the Cosmic Tactical Mercury seems bent to show the world that a rugged and reliable product provided by American workers doesn't necessarily need to involve a price tag in the thousands of dollars (or euros).

Manufactured around a matte black lightweight aluminum alloy body, the Mercury micro red dot sight is IP68 certified, meaning it will survive immersion in 3 meters (9.8 ft) of water for thirty minutes; in terms of shock resistance, the Cosmic Tactical Mercury will withstand recoil levels well above those of 12-gauge and .308 Winchester, making it perfect for all modern hunting, sporting and defensive rifles, carbines, shotguns, and handguns.

Shape-wise, the front window of the Cosmic Tactical Mercury red dot sight is reminiscent to that of the Trijicon RMR – including the fact that it's slightly concave on top, with a center crest, a design conceived to offer superior protection against impacts, be them due to the sight itself being dropped or to something being dropped on it.

The optical glass lens features a scratch-proof, reflex-proof, fog-proof and waterproof coating that's also dirt-repellent and helps keeping the lens clean, which is conclusive to a clear field of view in all conditions.

Another thing that the Mercury micro red dot sight shares with Trijicon's RMR is the footprint – meaning, its base size and shape is the same as the RMR's and so is the position of the mounting screw.

This means the Mercury compatible with all Trijicon RMR adapter plates and direct mounts right out of the box – and there are a lot of sport shooting, service, and defensive pistols out there with a RMR-compatible optics-ready slide. The Cosmic Tactical Mercury can also piggyback on fixed or variable magnification riflescopes to provide quick CQB engagement capabilities.

Unfortunately – and that's the only thing that the Mercury seems to have against it – no Picatinny rail interface comes issued with this red dot sight, making it impossible to use as a primary sight right out of the box with firearms that feature a MIL-STD 1913 rail, such as short barrel rifles, PCCs, PDWs, and the like.

That's not much of a drawback, however, considering how Trijicon RMR compatible Picatinny mounts, of any height and profile, are literally a dime a dozen and universally available.

Reticle-wise, like the Saturn 2.0 4x32 sight, the Cosmic Tactical Mercury ditches the double-illumination system used by the original Trijicon RMR – which features a fiber-optic insert for day use and a tritium source for night operation – chiefly due to the inherent costs and to the tightly controlled nature of tritium technology, opting instead for a standard, tried-and-true LED powered by a single CR2032 battery. Not without a touch of sofistication

The Cosmic Tactical Mercury micro red dot sight is available in red dot and green dot variants; the center dot is adjustable for windage and elevation via a set of two turrets located on the top rear and right side of the body; the turrets are recessed to prevent accidental loss of zero due to friction or manipulation, can be operated via a small flat tool, and offer crisply audible and tactile 1 MOA clicks for fine adjustment.

Making the adjustment easier is a notch on the rear portion of the sight body, just in front of the elevation adjustment dial that helps in co-witnessing. In the unlikely event of a malfunction, it will also dub as an emergency rear sight allowing you to continue shooting until the issue can be fixed.

Two rubberized buttons located on both sides of the sight allow manual on/off and brightness adjustment on nine different levels – eight visible levels, providing adaptability to basically any environmental light conditions, plus one compatible with night vision devices – while also dubbing as a reticle selector: the shooter can go for a standard 3 MOA center dot, a crosshair, a dot with a 60 MOA outer ring, or a combination of all of the above.

Additionally, the Cosmic Tactical Mercury micro red dot sight also features a shake-awake system that turns the reticle on when movement is detected and shuts it down after five minutes to save power. Depending on the selected brightness level, a single CR2032 battery can last for up to five years.

In any case, the battery seat is located on top of the sight, allowing its replacement without having to remove the sight from the firearm and thus without losing zero. The battery seat cap can be unscrewed with a flat-faced screwdriver or with a tool that comes issued from factory; the opening slot is slightly raised to facilitate tactile indexing in low light conditions.

The Cosmic Tactical Mercury micro red dot sight comes issued from factory with a lens cloth, four mounting screws and their Torx key, a multi-purpose tool for opening the battery seat and for adjusting windage and elevation, and of course with an instruction manual.

It is a rugged, reliable, down-to-earth product that will meet all the needs of the the average hunter, sport shooter, law enforcement officer, private security guard, or citizen who owns guns for personal or property defense, while omitting the largely superfluous features that are generally useful only to very high-end competition shooters or military personnel who operate in non-permissive environments for long periods of time – the type of features that will definitely entice the average user on paper, but will ultimately result in having no effect on their experience with the product other than a higher price tag.

The retail price for the Cosmic Tactical Mercury micro red dot sight on the US market is set at $249.95; unfortunately the company doesn't ship internationally and has no foreign distributors so far, and that's a shame, because based on what we could test so far, Cosmic Tactical is a company that has a lot going for it and its products would definitely be met with a warm welcome by shooters in Europe and elsewhere.
