The Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport III 5.56x45mm NATO semi-automatic modern sporting rifle, introduced on the US market in late February, represents the third generation of Smith & Wesson's AR-15 variant rifles for hunting, sport shooting, and personal defense.
Manufactured entirely in the United States – more specifically in Smith & Wesson's new factory located in Maryville, Tennessee, opened in October 2023 – the M&P-15 Sport III semi-automatic rifle was optimized to be an excellent entry-level choice for first-time competition shooters, more specifically in practical shooting specialties, as well as for home or property defense and varmint hunting.
Built around two forged, MIL-STD hard-anodized black lightweight aluminum alloy receivers, with a standard M4-style pistol grip and integrated trigger guard, the Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport III features a mid-length gas system for lighter recoil and a free-floating, Armornite-finished 16-inch barrel with a Birdcage-style flash hider and a quite unusual (for an AR-15) 5R rifling pattern whose 1:8" twist rate allows the M&P-15 Sport III to perfectly stabilize a vast majority of commercial 5.56x45mm NATO and .223 Remington loads.
Other features of the Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport III rifle include a basic, six-position collapsible M4-type buttstock, a 15-inch machined aluminum M-LOK handguard for accessories and a full-length MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for optics or flip-up iron sights.
The M&P-15 Sport III is compatible with all AR-15 style (STANAG 4179) magazines, of any make, material and capacity, and comes issued from factory with either a 30-rounds or a 10-rounds magazine depending on local laws and regulations.
Standing at 89 centimeters (35") in overall length and weighing in at 2,95 kilograms (104.32 oz) when empty, the Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport III semi-automatic modern sporting rifle is available at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $799.00 on the US market.
