Steyr Arms – the legendary Austrian firearms manufacturer officially known as Steyr-Mannlicher until 2019 – can rightfully pride itself to be the birthplace of straight-pull rifles: the first widely adopted straight-pull design, the Mannlicher Model 1886, was designed by Ferdinand Ritter Von Mannlicher and manufactured by ŒWG Steyr starting in 1886 and all the way through the early 1920s.

The recent launch of the new Steyr Arms RMS Wild hunting rifle can thus be considered a return to form: for the first time in over 140 years, the Austrian company is once again manufacturing a straight-pull action rifle – a category of firearms that has been witnessing a spike in popularity over the past few years.

Available at launch in two calibers – .308 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield, both feeding through 3-rounds proprietary detachable polymer magazines – the new Steyr Arms RMS Wild hunting rifle was designed to offer lightning-fast cycling and better follow-up shot capabilities even for the standards of straight-pull rifles thanks to a redesigned action made to be truly super smooth: a feature that is sure to catch the attention of big game hunters, cull hunters, and a wide array of outdoorsmen and sportsmen at large.

What makes the new RMS Wild rifle truly stand out among the straight-pull rifles crowd is the patented Monobloc design construction, first introduced by Steyr Arms in 2019: the action, receiver and cold-hammer forged barrel – available in 470mm / 18.5", 508mm / 20" or 558mm / 22" variants, and with a 1:10" or 1:12" twist rate depending on the caliber – are not separate components, but rather manufactured as a single piece out of a solid steel billet.

The Monobloc design eliminates any potential issue connected to the pairing of the barrel with the action and maximizes stability, accuracy, and performance. At the heart of the action is a three-locking lug bolt manufactured out of stainless steel, while a Picatinny rail provides plenty of space for the installation of any modern optical sight and a M15x1 thread at the muzzle allows the use of accessories such as flash hiders, muzzle brakes, compensators, or sound suppressors (where legal).

The monobloc action/barrel of the Steyr Arms RMS Wild rifle is then bedded on to a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer stock, available in light brown or light green variants, with black inserts on the handguard, grip, buttplate, and cheekpiece.

At the front end of the handguard is a short Picatinny rail segment for accessories. The length of pull and height of the cheek riser can instead be adjusted with a set of inserts; the Steyr Arms logo medallion located on the right side of the stock is actually a button that allows the cheek riser and buttpiece to be removed in order for such inserts to be installed.

Other features of the new Steyr Arms RMS Wild straight-pull rifle include a single-stage trigger that breaks at approximately 700 grams (ca. 25 oz) and is adjustable in position for about 8mm; a top tang, easily reachable and super-smooth two-position wheel safety; and a cocked status indicator with bolt lock mechanism for additional piece of mind.

The Steyr Arms RMS Wild straight-pull hunting rifle ranges from 987 mm / 38.8" and 1075 mm / 42.3" in overall length, depending on barrel length and caliber, and weighs in at approximately 3,2 kilograms (7.05 lbs) when empty. Visit the official Steyr Arms website for further information; all inquiries concerning local availability and pricing are to be addressed to your closest Steyr Arms retailer or to the authorized Steyr Arms distributor for your Country.
