Hornady 300 PRC Match and Precision Hunter cartridges
SHOT Show 2019 – The 300 PRC Precision Rifle Cartridge is one of the hottest new loads in the field of long-range hunting and sport shooting, and new for 2019 Hornady has loads in 300 PRC in their Match and Precision Hunter lines
First announced by Hornady in late 2018, the 300 PRC is a Magnum .30-caliber cartridge specifically designed to take advantage of long, heavy for caliber bullets capable of delivering the highest levels of accuracy and aerodynamic performance and satisfy the needs and preferences of the most demanding hunters and long-range shooters of the 21st Century.
Based on the .375 Ruger cartridge case, the 300 PRC is non-belted and uses a standard .532” magnum bolt face and headspaces off the 30 degree shoulder. This results in better chamber alignment than standard belted magnum cartridges and allows for improved stacking and feeding from fixed magazines.
The 300 PRC cartridge and chamber were designed concurrently combining to provide excellent alignment and highly tuned performance. The cartridge case is designed to use common, temperature stable, Magnum speed rifle powders producing extremely consistent velocity and increased barrel life compared to currently available magnum cartridges.
New for 2019, Hornady introduces two new 300 PRC loads in its already vast product line, more specifically a 300 PRC 225 gr ELD Match load and a 300 PRC 212 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter load.
The 225 gr ELD Match loads, conceived for long-range shooting, are loaded with Hornady’s Match bullets, with AMP jackets and a Heat Shield polymer tip that creates a perfect meplat. Hornady’s 300 PRC 225 gr ELD Match loads are loaded on carefully selected cases, based on strict criteria such as wall thickness uniformity, internal capacity, case weight and consistent wall concentricity; and with carefully matched powders for optimal pressure, velocity and consistent accuracy.
The 212 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter loads, conceived for long-range and big-game hunting, offer streamlined secant ogives with an optimum boat-tail design, a highly concentric AMP jacket and a polymer Heat Shield tip for superior aerodynamics; verified by Doppler radar to maintain best-in-class ballistic coefficient, these loads also provide devastating performance on conventional ranges (up to 400 yards) and the best terminal performance available on extended ranges, exhibiting controlled expansion with a large mushroom and 85-90% retained weight, the bullet provides deep penetration and large cavities.
Rifles in 300 PRC are currently being manufactured by Bergara, FIERCE Firearms, G.A. Precision, Remington Custom Shop, H-S Precision, Seekins Precision, Gunwerks, Proof Research, Barrett Firearms and Stuteville Precision.
