Bilson Arms Pivotal Buttstock, a new and better idea for your AR-15
Bilson Arms, a Louisiana company, offers a patent-pending Pivotal Buttstock for AR-15 type rifles and carbines, providing quicker transition between magnified and unmagnified angled optics or iron sights: definitely a better idea for competition or shooting from odd positions
Bilson Arms is a small Broussard, Louisiana-based company dedicated to the manufacture of AR-15 type rifles and accessories for civilian, hunting, sporting and defensive purposes; the owner of the company has a background on the engineering of upgrades for the oil and gas extraction industry.
In mid-2022, Bilson Arms introduced a particularly interesting solution that will appeal specifically to those shooters who use AR-15 variants in competition shooting: the Bilson Arms Pivotal Buttstock.
Nowadays in IPSC and other practical shooting disciplines, hunting and tactical conditions, the use of offset unmagnified optics or offset iron sights in conjunction with magnified optics has become more and more popular... and that's because it is definitely more practical.
Using a combination of magnified optics and offsets unmagnified optics or iron sights allows shooters to accurately engage targets at mid-to-long ranges while retaning the capability to quickly transition to short-range engagement options faster than they could if they had to fiddle with a magnification lever or a flip-to-side magnifier.
All it takes for the transition to happen is to tilt your rifle 45 degrees to one side – but you need to practice and be proficient in the transition, as tilting your rifle will change your cheek weld and the contact point between your shoulder and the stock, thus changing the way you perceive and handle recoil.
The Bilson Arms solution is just as unique as simple, and reminds in part of the shape of high-end long range or olympic competition rifles. The Bilson Arms Pivotal Buttstock is manufactured out of 6061-T6 lightweight aluminum alloy – availabile in various colors, including anodized or cerakote black, gold, red, and blue – and just installs on a standard buffer tube.
The Pivotal Buttstock will extend just like any M4-type collapsible buttstock, and features a prominent buttpad with a generous synthetic padding, connected to the body of the stock by a socket joint with full 360-degrees rotation capability.
A set of built-in positional detent points and an adjustable tensioner on the rotating assembly allow the shooter to set the tilt angle and the level of resistance. This means that the shooter can easily decide just how much, and how easily, his or her rifle will be capable of tilting sideways to provide quick transition between a magnified scope and the backup sighting system.
The transition becomes seamless, does not interrupt or change the contact between the buttstock and the shooter's shoulder any longer, and does not disrupt proper cheek wield.
The full 360-degrees rotational capabilities allow shooters to adjust their Bilson Arms Pivotal Buttstock for left-handed or right-handed operation. The padded, swiveling buttstock assembly can also be adjusted for elevation, allowing shooters to fully customize their shooting experience.
The Bilson Arms Pivotal Buttstock comes from factory with a spare swivel joint ball in case the installed one gets lost or damaged, and is available on the US market at a retail price of $249.00 for all variants. Custom colors or engravings can be obtained by inquiring directly with Bilson Arms. No informations concerning international availability have been disclosed so far.
