Firefield introduces the Rangepoint laser rangefinder: essential, lightweight, easy to use, with no bells and whistles, and for all pockets

For rifle hunters or precision shooters, a laser rangefinder is a crucial tool for calculating the distance to a target, especially when the target is moving or on rough or difficult terrain. At extreme distances, a laser rangefinder is essential for correctly calculating the ballistic drop coefficient and the necessary compensation.

Laser rangefinders are also among the most expensive tools in a typical hunter's or long-range shooter's kit, due to their technological content. For the most well-known and renowned brands, the price of a laser rangefinder can easily reach several hundred euros; for binoculars with a built-in rangefinder, it's not uncommon to exceed several thousand.

This means that for novice hunters and shooters, young people, or those on a limited budget, acquiring a laser rangefinder can be challenging; the same goes for more experienced users with deeper pockets who still want a backup laser rangefinder to have on hand in case of technical issues with their first choice.

This type of utilitarian, entry-level customer, however, has always been the target of the Texas-based brand Firefield, which in 2026 made its debut on the laser rangefinder market with the Firefield Rangepoint model: a rugged device, essential in its features yet highly functional, and above all, affordable for everyone.

Starting from a simple premise—not everyone always needs a laser rangefinder with a ballistic calculator, barometric pressure reader, environmental sensors, or Bluetooth connectivity—Firefield designed the Rangepoint to be a brutally simple tool to use, without excessive complications, frills, or extra buttons or controls.

The Rangepoint features two buttons: one activates the distance measurement, the other switches between yards and meters, so Firefield didn't even need to develop versions with different settings or software for different markets.

The Firefield Rangepoint's body is made of rubberized polymer to ensure a secure grip in most conditions—even with wet, greasy, or weak hands from extreme cold, or when wearing gloves—as well as protection from the elements, according to IP54 specifications.

The device isn't waterproof, but it will withstand even heavy rain. This isn't a bad thing, considering it's designed to operate reliably in temperatures ranging from -12 to +49°C.

The upside of polymer construction instead of aluminum is the radical weight reduction: the Firefield Rangepoint weighs just 165 grams, including batteries. And speaking of batteries, the Firefield laser rangefinder uses two commercial 3-volt AAA batteries, either rechargeable or disposable.

These aren't the sophisticated and powerful built-in lithium batteries, rechargeable via an integrated USB port, used by most competing products... but this is a deliberate choice, always with the focus on economy and simplicity in mind: AAA batteries are readily available, and they're quick and easy to replace when necessary. Two batteries can provide up to five thousand consecutive duty cycles, or up to four hundred hours of continuous use.

Optically, the Firefield Rangepoint laser rangefinder features a 25mm objective lens and a non-illuminated black reticle, for a fixed 6x magnification and a 7-degree field of view; the eyepiece offers 16mm of eye relief, and rangefinder readings are projected onto an LCD display. The rangefinder's range ranges from a minimum of five yards (4.57 meters) to a maximum of 800 yards (731.52 meters).

Measuring 11.5 centimeters long, just over seven centimeters high, and four centimeters thick, the Firefield Rangepoint is the epitome of essentiality: it has everything you need, and nothing you don't. The retail price in Europe is €119.99.
