Glenfield Firearms Model A, a new entry level bolt-action hunting rifle
Ruger Firearms brings back the iconic Glenfield brand with the new Model A bolt-action rifle, a versatile and affordable entry level hunting tool available in seven calibers
Officially launched on the US market in early November 2025, the Glenfield Firearms Model A bolt-action hunting rifle marks the return of a popular brand of firearms that had been gone for over forty years but still holds a place of cherish in the hearts and memories of countless hunting and shooting enthusiasts in north America.
Established in 1960, the Glenfield brand was used by Marlin Firearms to publicize, identify and distribute a good number of variants of some of their own most popular models, which had been tinkered with in terms of features and manufacturing in order to substantially lower the price tag and thus appeal to what we today refer to as the "entry level" market for affordable firearms.
The Glenfield catalog included everything from .22 rimfire bolt-action and semi-automatic carbines for small game hunting and plinking, to .410 gauge shotguns and .30-30 rifles for taking down more serious game in the woods of north America. Their distribution was also studied to appeal to a "popular" slice of consumers: Glenfield firearms were sold in large department store chains such as Sears or JCPenney, and via mail-order catalogs until the mail-order sale of rifles and shotguns to individuals, and generally the shipment of firearms in interstate commerce, were banned in the United States by the 1968 Gun Control Act.

Retired for good by Marlin in 1983, the Glenfield brand revives in 2025 thanks to Ruger Firearms, which absorbed the Marlin Firearms brand in 2023 after the bankruptcy of their previous owner, Remington. The new Model A bolt-action rifle is the first entry in the re-established Glenfield Firearms line, and is entirely manufactured in the US – more specifically in the Newport, NH plant that Ruger has been operating since 1963.
Already at first sight, it's clear to see how Ruger's approach to the Glenfield brand is the same as Marlin's back in the day: no-frills guns, yet nothing to shake a stick at, that won't let their users down in the hour of need and will withstand years of rugged use. The ideal choice for a truck gun, a backup hunting rifle, a culling rifle to keep your livestock safe from predators, or to introduce the youngest generations to the basics of marksmanship, hunting ethics, and safe handling of firearms.

Obviously based on the tried-and-true Ruger American Rifle, the new Glenfield Firearms Model A feeds through detachable magazines – differing in shape and type depending on type and ammunition – and is currently available in seven popular hunting calibers: .223 Remington, .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, 6.5 Creedmoor, .350 Legend, and .450 Bushmaster.
All variants are built on a green polymer stock with a moss green splinter finish, and all come with a top tang sliding safety, built-in sling swivel studs, a rubberized recoil pad, a single-piece bolt with a 70-degrees opening handle, and an externally adjustable trigger that the shooter can tinker with to break crisply between 1,3 kg / 3 lbs and 2,2 kg / 5 lbs.
The blued alloy steel action comes with a factory-installed Picatinny top rail for optics; all variants, regardless of the caliber, comes with a 20 inch / 51 cm barrel, and basically all rifles share the same length (about 1 mt or 40 to 40.5 inches) and weigh in at approximately 2,9 / 3 kilograms or 6.3 to 6.6 lbs.
All factory-issued magazines are single-stack and hold up to five rounds; most of Glenfield Model A rifle magazines are flush-fit for a streamlined design and better shooting from prone or supported positions.
All variants also come with a thread at the muzzle, mostly 5/8"-24 (exceptions are .450 Bushmaster, with a 11/16"-24 thread pitch, and .350 Legend, with a 1/2"-28 thread pitch), all protected by an easily removed screw-on thread protector, allowing easy installation of flash hiders, muzzle brakes, compensators, or sound suppressors where legal.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the Glenfield Firearms Model A bolt-action rifle on the US market is currently set at $499 for all variants.
That does indeed open the door for the new Model A to become a staple of entry-level hunting firearms in the United States, and indeed on other markets worldwide should export prices manage to remain affordable as well.
