New for 2025, Federal Ammunition introduces the 7mm Backcountry, a new all-purpose, all-range magnum hunting cartridge that pushes the boundaries of 7mm calibers offering superior ballistics and terminal performance, including through compact, shorter-barreled or silenced rifles.

The 7mm Backcountry cartridge achieves all of this through its patented Peak Alloy case. Built of an advanced steel alloy that’s totally unlike the steel used in low-cost range ammunition, the next-generation, one-piece case design allows higher velocities over modern brass case ammunition.

Since the cartridge is dimensionally smaller than its closest brass-case counterparts, 7mm Backcountry achieves considerable ballistic advantages through smaller rifles and with an extra round in the magazine of most platforms. According to Federal's website, Peak Alloy cases are also reloadable.

As of today, Federal's 7mm Backcountry is available in five different loads: with a 155 or 170 grain Terminal Ascent bullets; 195 grain Berger Elite Hunter bullet; 168 grain Barnes LRX bullet; and 175 grain Fusion Tipped bullet.

As SHOT Show 2025 launches, no less than 83 bolt-action hunting rifle models chambered in 7mm Backcountry have been announced by eleven premium manufacturers such as Christensen Arms, Geissele, PROOF Research, Seekins Precision, Fierce Arms, Horizon Firearms, Weatherby, Savage Arms, Gunwerks, AllTerra Arms and Pure Precision.
