Olight's new H1R Nova: an all-rounder, ultra-compact flashlight
In the turn of a few years, the Olight company has improved the quality of its flashlights, quickly coming to level with some of the best known and longest-established competitors from the United States, Europe, and Asia.
This year the company introduced several new products dedicated to the outdoors, and professional uses of all kinds. Among these, the new Olight H1R Nova, a true all-rounder particularly useful for hunters also.

Built around a 2.4 in. / 61.5 mm long black machined hard-anodized aluminum tube, and sporting a 90-degrees angled bezel with a 0.8 in. / 21 mm diameter, the Olight H1R Nova is as compact as it gets – and light too, at 1.82 oz (51,59 grams) of overall weight.
And yet, it is powerful enough for the everyday use: the top-mounted, highly-sensitive activation button provides a maximum output of 600 lumens in "Turbo" mode, with a peak beam intensity of 1.280 cd that will reach as far as 72 metres.
Four lower-outputs are available, decreasing at each push of the button – respectively at 180, 60, 15 and 2 lumens. The maximum battery runtime shifts between 80 minutes to a maximum of six days, depending from the selected output mode.

Performance is guaranteed by a single Cree XM-L2 LED, mounted in the bezel and protected by a high-reflection, proprietary TIR lens.
The flashlight also features a sixth output mode, which is not widely publicized: while two quick pushes on the activation button will activate the "Turbo" mode, three quick pushes will activate the "SOS" mode – basically a high-speed strobe at the maximum available output power.

The Olight H1R Nova flashlight comes issued with a removable and reversible belt clip, which – coupled with the angled bezel – cleverly allows hand-free use when attached to a shirt pocket or collar.
Another issued accessory is an elastic headband with silicone flashlight holder providing 180-degrees rotation capabilities. The user can thus quickly convert the Olight H1R Nova into a headlamp; outdoors enthusiasts, climbers and spelunkers, rescue workers and simple laymen are among the users that may find this feature particularly handy.

The Olight H1R Nova flashlight is IPX8-rated as waterproof up to 2 metres, and will resist impact from free fall up to 1,5 metres. It is compatible with any commercial CR123A battery, but is factory-issued with a single RCR123A battery – a proprietary rechargeable device to be used only and solely with the Olight pocket flashlights and with the factory-issued recharger.
As a matter of fact, and just as the vast majority of Olight's latest, the H1R Nova comes issued with a proprietary reloading station consisting in a magnetized base and a 50-cm long cable with an USB jack.
The base will engage the bottom of the flashlight's tube automatically, and will allow recharging through any USB port, adapter, or docking station. An embedded LED indicator shifts from red to green when the battery is fully charged.

With a suggested price that goes at 65 euros in Europe and $66.95 in the United States, the Olight H1R Nova flashlight is a great choice for the price. It is not Olight's most powerful device, but it's definitely one of the most compact, lightest, and handier.
