Brand new for late 2022, the Ruger SFAR 7.62x51mm caliber semi-automatic rifle was meant to turn the hard-hitting, but bulky and heavy, AR-10 platform in .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO closer in terms of weight, dimensions, size, and ergonomics to its "kid brother" –the 5.56mm/.223-cal. AR-15.
SFAR stands for "Small Frame Autoloading Rifle": the Ruger SFAR is, indeed, the closest thing to a "short-action" AR-10, built on two Type III hard-coat black anodized, 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum alloy receivers that have been redimensioned to offer the ballistic advantage of 7.62x51mm but without the extra mass, length, size, and weight that's typical of AR-10s.

The Ruger SFAR is available with a 16-inch barrel or a 20-inch barrel; both are cold-hammer forged out of 4140 chrome-moly steel and feature an extremely accurate 5R rifling with a 1:10" twist rate, and a massive Ruger 2-port Boomer muzzle brake installed on to a 5/8"-24 threaded muzzle.
The Ruger SFAR features a mid-length gas system with a 0.750" 4-position rotary-regulator gas block; a chrome-lined 8620 steel bolt carrier and nitride-processed, staked gas key; a DLC-coated titanium firing pin; and CNC-machined bolt and barrel extensions, manufactured out of high-strength super alloy steel that outperforms traditional C158 bolts.
The locking lugs are tapered to further strenghten the breech to support larger short-action cartridges, and dual ejectors and an optimized extractor to ensure positive extraction and ejection of the spent case through the enlarged ejection port.
Each Ruger SFAR rifle comes with a MagPul MOE-SL pistol grip and six-position collapsible buttstock, and with a machined aluminum M-LOK handguard with QD sling swivel cups and either a full-length top Picatinny rail (on the 20" barrel variant) or two shorter top rail segments (for the 16" barrel variants). The upper receiver is also railed to accommodate the shooter's choice of optics or back-up iron sights.
The Ruger SFAR semi-automatic rifle is compatible with SR25/AR-10-pattern .308 Win/7.62 NATO magazines, and each rifle comes with a MagPul PMAG 20-rounds magazine. The SFAR is compatible with mil-spec MSR trigger groups, receiver end plates, charging handles, pistol grips, and adjustable stocks, and comes from factory with Ruger's own Elite 452 two-stage trigger that delivers a smooth and crisp 4.5 lbs (2 kg) pull.
