In the late fall of 1941, when the final prototype of what would have been adopted as the M1 Carbine was submitted by Winchester Repeating Arms to the US Army, nobody could foresee how relevant for the war effort and how important for the history of gun industry that snappy, lightweight, low-caliber semi-automatic carbine would soon become.

Initially conceived to serve as what we would today refer to as a “PDW”, after the US became involved in World War II the M1 Carbine became popular among frontline troops – from paratroopers active in the European and north African fronts to Marines in the Pacific theater – for its light weight, maneuverability, and effectiveness at close range.

By 1945 it would become the most-produced American service weapon of World War II, with over 6 million samples manufactured by ten different companies.

The M1 Carbine and all its variants – including the folding stock M1-A1 and the select-fire M2 – would continue to serve the US Armed Forces in a decreasing capacity in Korea and all the way down to the early years of the Vietnam war.

Additionally, after World War II, over sixty Countries would receive shipments of M1 Carbines from the United States; they would serve as a rear-line service rifle or as a patrol carbine for Police for decades, in some cases well into the 1980s – or until today, in a few developing nations.

In the years following the end of World War II, several companies in the United States would undertake production of the M1 Carbine for commercial sales; to this day, it is still manufactured under the Auto-Ordnance brand. In terms of civilian use, starting in the 1950s and for at least two decades the M1 Carbine affirmed itself as the ultimate tactical firearm that a civilian should own if he could only own one – basically the 1960s counterpart of today’s AR-15.

The iconic nature of the M1 Carbine was not lost to the Chiappa Firearms company of Italy as it undertook a process of rapid modernization of its product catalog at the end of the 2000s, shifting from being “just” a manufacturer of 19th Century firearm replicas to offer more modern and versatile designs to meet the demand of today’s hunters and sport shooters.

Chiappa Firearms first announced the .22 Long Rifle M1-22 semi-automatic carbine in November 2011. Today the Chiappa Firearms M1-22 is a full line of variants, with the M1-22 Commemorative Edition being just the latest entry in the series, and a limited availability one at that.

Produced to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Chiappa Firearms M1-22 Commemorative Edition is a straight blowback semi-automatic carbine chambered in .22 Long Rifle, fed via 10-rounds single-stack detachable magazines and built on an alloy steel, a blued steel bolt and a blued steel 457 mm / 18” barrel with a 1:16” twist rate.

The Chiappa Firearms M1-22 Commemorative Edition comes with a fixed front sight with protective “dog ears”, and a couple of features that were not present on wartime M1 carbines but would be implemented on those that were retained in service by the US and other Countries from the 1950s onwards: a fully adjustable rear sight in lieu of the original flip-down peep sight, and a bayonet lug.

Despite being “just” a rimfire replica, the M1-22 Commemorative Edition is perfectly compatible with the M4 bayonet (and reproductions thereof) that was originally designed for the M1 Carbine in 1944 but for which very few carbines were equipped with a mounting lug until after the end of the war.

The wooden stock of the Chiappa Firearms M1-22 Commemorative Edition semi-automatic carbine comes with an embedded silver eagle medallion on the right side of the buttstock; the rifle also comes equipped with a WW2-accurate oil bottle and oiler, and with a light brown canvas sling, all sold in a printed cardboard box and topped with a certificate of authenticity.

Standing at 89 cm / 35” in overall length and weighing in at 1,3 kilograms (2.9 lbs) when empty, Chiappa’s M1-22 Commemorative Edition is an excellent, soft-shooting, accurate trainer and plinking rifle whose unique nature is guaranteed to turn heads at the range, and a must-have for militaria enthusiasts and collectors of WW2 firearms. And at that price, it would be a shame to let it go.

Only 1945 samples of the Chiappa M1-22 End of WWII 80th Anniversary Commemorative Edition carbine have been manufactured for worldwide sales. This symbolic carbine stands as a proud reminder of the fast and a homage to the future, to honor those who have fallen and those who have returned, and to bring history to life.
