CZ P-09 Nocturne: a new generation of hammer-fired pistols
The new CZ P-09 Nocturne series of pistols upgrade the design of the previous P-07 and P-09 models with compact and full-size models, optics-ready and improved for sport shooting or defensive purposes
Announced by Česká Zbrojovka on August 15, the new CZ P-09 Nocturne 9mm Luger series of semi-automatic pistols represents the third generation of hammer-fired, SA/DA polymer frame CZ-75 variations offered by the famous Czech-based company.
An upgrade over the pre-existing P-07 and P-09 pistols, the new CZ P-09 Nocturne models feature a complete restyling of the gripping surfaces on the frame, for better control in all situations, and a few improvements to the controls to make them easier to manipulate in the dark (hence the name "Nocturne").
The slide was also redesigned, with a new pattern of front and rear serrations and an optics-ready interface for micro red dot sights.
The Nocturne series currently consists of two variants: the compact CZ P-09C Nocturne feeds through a double-stack 15-rounds magazine, it's 185 mm (7.28") long overall and 137 mm (5.39") high, features a 95 mm (3.74") barrel, and weighs in at 740 grams (26.1 oz) with an empty magazine.
The full-size CZ P-09F Nocturne model is instead 208 mm (8.2") long and 150 mm (5.9") high overall, feeds through a 19-rounds double-stack magazine, comes with a 115 mm (4.5") barrel, and weighs in at 830 grams (29.27 oz) with an empty magazine.
Both models come with hammer-forged barrels, whose quality is guaranteed for life by CZ; both are also available in a Nocturne SR version with a 1/2"×28 UNEF 3A thread at the muzzle for devices such as flash hiders, compensators, or sound suppressors.
All other features are shared: the fibreglass-reinforced black polymer frame comes with a MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for tactical accessories, a higher profile magazine catch, and a redesigned and more user-friendly slide stop. Iron sights are available in luminescent or Tritium variants, and the optics interface is compatible with Shield RMS and Holosun K-series footprints.
The main feature of both variants, however, is CZ's own, improved Omega trigger. Easier to manufacture, and thus to maintain, the CZ Omega trigger offers a 21 Newton pull and a 10 mm / 0.39" travel in single actuion; a 44N pull and an approx. 13 mm / 0.51" travel in double action; and a reset of approximately 8mm (0.31").
Even more importantly, both the CZ Nocturne pistols come with an ambidextrous, frame-mounted thumb-activated safety switch, which thanks to the Omega trigger can be easily configured by the shooter to work as a 1911-style safety, allowing Condition 1 carry; or as a decocker, for Condition 2 carry.
