The Meprolight Mepro Evergreen sights are a new tritiumless led powered night sights for handguns, with the same footprint of traditional iron sights.
Targeted at markets where tritium sights are unavailable due to radioactive materials regulations, Mepro Evergreen sights have the same luminosity as a tritium sight, without the use of a regulated substance.
Tritium has been the mainstay of night sights for decades, but it has the disadvantage of being a regulated radioactive material, which makes tritium sights difficult or impossible to obtain for civilians in certain markets.
The new Meprolight Mepro Evergreen sights have the same characteristics of tritium iron sights but use a micro led to obtain the same result with a footprint only marginally larger than that of traditional gun sights, and therefore fit in standard holsters.
We are accustomed to red dot sights with batteries lasting 50.000 hours and even more on medium level brightness, which translates into years of continuous use, but as small as a micro red dot can get, it won’t ever be as small as iron sights and will usually require a specific holster for carry, and it also require specific training for effective use.
In their continuous research for better and better sighting solution, engineers at Meprolight have managed to put a micro LED with its own minuscule battery in a traditional iron sight, which is a pretty impressive feat, to achieve the same results of a tritium sight without using tritium.
Under every other aspect, Evergreen sights work exactly like tritium sights: there’s no need to switch them on, nor way to switch them off, the led system being minuscule and self-contained.
According to the manufacturer, the battery will last 5 years, after which the sight will become a simple iron sight and a new one will have to be purchased if the user wants to keep the night sight benefit, as there is no way for the user to replace the battery.
We asked Meprolight if there is a turnaround program for these sights, a way to turn in the spent sights and purchase new ones at a reduced price. Meprolight answered that as of today there is no turnaround program, but the company is evaluating this option.
What are the benefits of choosing Evergreen over tritium? Mainly, Evergreen sights are not regulated, so they are available to customers residing in countries where tritium sights are impossible to get.
Evergreen sights glow green in the dark (a choice that exploits the human’s eye higher sensitivity to green light to make them stand out even more) and are available as a glowing front sight with a yellow, green or orange accent ring to enhance sight picture in daylight, coupled with either a standard, non-glowing rear sight or a two-dot glowing Evergreen rear sight.
MSRP is about 140€ for the Evergreen front sight and traditional, non-glowing rear sight option, and about 160€ for the twin Evergreen front and rear sight option.rd holsters.
