Walther Pro PL60 Flashlights
Manufactured by UMAREX and sold under the Walther Pro brand dedicated to utility tools and personal defense products, the PL60 and PL60RS are compact yet sturdy EDC flashlights that will adapt to a wide array of uses
The product offering of the German-based Umarex group is no longer limited to airguns, airsoft replicas and blank-firing guns – nor just to firearms, given the Umarex ownership of Carl Walther GmbH: for many years, now, names such as ProSecur, WaltherPro, Perfecta, NXG, Alpina Sport and many others have been synonymous for popular and dependable self-defense instruments, gun care and maintenance tools and products, utility instruments, optics, and other useful products for sport shooters and outdoor enthusiasts.
And among those product lines is the Walther Pro PL series of pocket multipurpose flashlights. Today we decided to... shine a light on a couple of those, particularly the PL60 and PL60RS; these can be considered the mid-tier entries of the line in terms of performance, but break more than a record in terms of practicality and versatility.
Technically speaking, the PL60 and PL60RS flashlights are the same product, virtually identical one another. The only thing that tells them apart is the set of factory-issued accessories – but we will get to that in a moment.
Both the Walther Pro PL60 and PL60RS pocket flashlights are built on a Type 3 anti-reflex black hard-anodized aluminum alloy tube with a 26 mm (0.10") diameter, that's sealed front and back with O-rings to provide IPX-8 resistance to water for immersion up to 15 metres in depth.
They're also both merely 14 centimetres (5.5 inches) long; the weigth varies slightly from the 118 grams (4.16 oz) of the PL60 to the 125 grams (4.4 oz) of the PL60RS – but that's with battery included. Overall weight without battery, for both, tops 85 grams (roughly 3 ounces), what makes them perfect for EDC pocket carry.
Walther Pro's PL60 and PL60RS flashlights feature advanced power-management electronics and a single Cree XP-G2 LED whose output can be set to three levels: 45 lumens (10%), 170 lumens (40%) and 500 lumens (100%); the maximum beam range varies from 50 meters (about 54 yards) at 10% to 100 meters (109 yards) at 40% and 160 meters (175 yards) at 100%.
A twisting bezel allows the user to adjust the beam focus to several levels for either extremely concentrated and long-range search capabilities or a wider illumination area to enhance awareness of one's surroundings.
A tail button allows the user to switch the PL60 or PL60RS on or off, and to switch between available output modes. Both flashlights also offer a fourth output mode, dubbed the "Tactical Defense Mode", which is basically a high-power strobe.
Both the Walther Pro PL60 and PL60RS feature a "Multi Battery System", which allows them to use different battery types: they can fit directly either two 3V commercial CR123 batteries or a single ICR18650 Lithium-ion battery. A factory-issued adapter also allows the use of three AAA batteries.
The Walther Pro PL60 and PL60RS are also issued from factory with a lanyard; the Walther Pro PL60 flashlight also comes issued with a belt holster, while the PL60RS comes issued with a remote activation switch that replaced the tailcap for tactical purposes, and a universal double-clamp holder that allows the installation of the flashlight to the barrel of a long gun (eg. a shotgun) for night hunting, night shooting, service or home/personal/property protection.
Due to technical reasons, when the remote activation switch is installed, the maximum output of the Walther Pro PL60RS decreases of about 20 percent, and the mid- and low-output levels and the "Tactical Defense Mode" are disabled.
The Walther Pro PL60 and PL60RS flashlights are already available on the international commercial market. Customers may want to inquire with their closest authorized Umarex retailer for local availability and price.
