Officially announced on April 21, the Mossberg 990 AfterShock is a new semi-automatic 12-gauge "firearm", available in two barrel lengths – 37 cm / 14.¾" or 47 cm / 18.½" – and coming from factory with a black synthetic horizontal grip uniquely shaped for an ergonomic, secure grip and featuring a rubberized palm pad to minimize felt recoil.

The configuration of the Mossberg 990 AfterShock, as well as its classification as a "firearm", is a consequence of the 1934 National Firearms Act, which classifies all shotguns with a barrel shorter than 18 inches or shorter than 26 inches in overall length as "Short Barrel Shotguns" – a category of firearms whose purchase and ownership is subject to a Federal background check and the payment of a 200$ tax stamp for each sample, further local or State restrictions notwithstanding.

The horizontal grip, negating the possibility to fire the gun from the shoulder or in a classic off-hand position, turns this and other similar designs (think the popular "Shockwave" guns) into simple "Firearms", exempt from NFA restrictions. Of course such restrictions don't apply in Europe and other jurisdictions, where firearms such the Mossberg 990 AfterShock may be considered as simple shotguns or, depending on the overall length, pistols.

The Mossberg 990 AfterShock is built around a blued alloy receiver and features a durable gas-operating system that is fully contained within the ergonomically shaped, slip-proof textured forend.

Internal parts such as the gas piston, magazine tube, hammer and sear feature a nickel-boron coating and a special finish for enhanced corrosion resistance and smooth, reliable cycling.

The blued steel barrel of the Mossberg 990 AfterShock features a red fiber optic LPA front sight; the magazine tube holds up to five 70mm/2.¾" shotshells, but the Mossberg 990 AfterShock is perfectly capable of handling 76mm/3" "Magnum" shotshells, making it even more flexible for personal, home, and property defense or for short-range tactical applications.

To further improve performance, the Mossberg 990 AfterShock comes with an enlarged and beveled loading port designed for ease of loading; elongated, pinch-free elevator; and anodized, bright orange follower. The oversized, ergonomic top-mounted safety can easily be operated by a left or right-handed shooter and features a highly visible red indicator.

Other features of the Mossberg 990 AfterShock include a knurled charging handle; an oversized, paddle-style bolt release; a quick-detachment cup incorporated on the rear of the grip; and an embossed strap attached to the streamlined forend.

The 14.¾" variant of the Mossberg 990 AfterShock is also optionally available with a visible green-light Crimson Trace Lasersaddle attached to the right side of the receiver, adjustable for windage and elevation and providing multiple touchpad activation points.
