Laserspeed LS-FL5 multifunction laser sight: surprisingly good!

Posted in:

We had the chance to test the LS-FL5 multifunction laser sight, manufactured in China by Laserspeed: integrating a visible laser, a 500-lumen tactical flashlight, an infrared laser and IR illuminator in a single device, the LS-FL5 is a professional-grade product sold at commercial-tier price

Sold under the Laserspeed brand, the LS-FL5 is a multifunction laser sight with visible and infrared laser and illumination sources, sold at a competitive price for both civilian and professional customers

Laserspeed LS-FL5 multifunction laser sight: surprisingly good!

The Laserspeed brand – established and used by the Chinese Dandong Xunlei Technology Co. company for its products since 2008 – is mostly known in Europe and north America for its consumer-oriented, budget-priced laser sights and tactical flashlights, some of which are sold at such a low price tag, they’ve become a staple of the MILSIM and Airsoft markets.

And yet, the Company is perfectly capable of manufacturing much higher-tier products, aimed specifically at a professional (MIL/LE/Govt.) clientele: that’s the case for the Laserspeed LS-FL5 multifunction laser sight, one of Laserspeed’s latest products, which we at GUNSweek.com were among the world’s first to try.

At a glance, the Laserspeed LS-FL5 is remarkably vanilla in terms of layout and design, being very similar to basically any other rifle laser out there. Standing in at 11 centimeters (4.33”) in length, 7,7 centimeters (3.03”) in width and 3,7 centimeters (1.46”) in height, the LS-FL5 is also pretty much on the large side if compared to other similar products marketed internationally by competitors such as Sightmark.

And yet, compared to its most direct competitors on the commercial market, the Laserspeed LS-FL5 stands on a class of its own, with an 830 nm, 20 mw infrared laser and a 510 nm, 5 mw visible laser; that would make it an extremely powerful device already, but a more powerful, high-output 8 mw function has been launched in June 2023.

The Laserspeed LS-FL5 is built around a matte black, 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum alloy body that weighs in at barely 298 grams (10.51 oz), making up partially for the relatively large size. The battery adds but a couple of grams to the overall weight: the LS-FL5 is powered by a single, rechargeable 18650 battery, which is not included in the package.

The device will operate on two commercial CR123A batteries in case of extreme emergency, but the manufacturing company urges users to avoid using CR123As on the LS-FL5, as the use of batteries for which a device is not certified may damage the electronics and is generally not recommended on any device.

The Laserspeed LS-FL5 can be installed on a Picatinny rail through an integral, machined interface that is tightened by a large-headed Hex screw. An easy and practical solution under the engineering and manufacturing point of view, which also has the advantage of allowing the device to maintain a low profile – particularly if installed above the bore axis of a rifle rather than to one side of the handguard – but with the classic drawbacks of requiring a Hex key for removal and posing the risk of stripping the screw in case of mishandling, particularly on the field.

A quick-detach bracket would definitely be an improvement, but with the battery compartment and its screw-on metal cap located on the rear of the device, you may not need to remove the LS-FL5 from your gun very often, if at all, once installed.

Also to the rear of the device is a protected connector that allows the use of the issued remote switch, with a 38 cm (approx. 15”) cable. The third and final element located at the rear of the body is the manual spot width adjustment dial for the IR illuminator.

The Laserspeed LS-FL5 is powered by a single rechargeable 18650 battery, a convenient choice since the device comes without a factory-issued battery. Two CR123A batteries can be used in lieu of a single 18650, but this isn't recommended by the manufacturer except in case of extreme emergency

The visibility is absolutely excellent for all sources. The visible green laser is extremely daylight-visible; in a bright, super-sunny summer day the maximum effective range may be slightly reduced, but not dramatically. The IR laser is extremely effective even when looked at through a less-than-top-notch IR vision device, and the illuminator is as bright as it can be, making the night world look like broad daylight with your usual shade of green or grey. For everything from night shooting competition to night hunting, down to law enforcement applications, the Laserspeed LS-FL5 is an extremely powerful and versatile tool.

All emitters are protected by a set of rubber caps that are secured to the body of the device so they can’t get lost. As an alternative to the remote switch, a built-in activation button is located on top of the device; two separate switches allow the user to navigate and select between different options of use.

The right side of the LS-FL5: the recessed turret allows windage adjustment of the emitters. The elevation adjustment is located right on top.

More precisely, a three-position switch provides a handy choice between high-power and low-power output, with a central “Off” mode that disengages all activation buttons, to save power and prevent accidental activation. A second, six-position switch allows the operator to set the LS-FL5 to any one of the available output modes: visible light, tactical flashlight, infrared laser, infrared illuminator, or combinations of both.

When the visible light or the visible light and laser mode combination are selected, quickly pressing the activation button three times will activate a powerful strobe mode.

Two separate, built-in turrets – located respectively on top and to the right of the aluminum chassis, and recessed to prevent accidental manipulation – allow users to adjust the visible and IR lasers by using a flat-headed screwdriver or a similar tool; 0.25 MIL clicks make precision adjustment very easy, with a maximum FWHM (full width at half maximum) divergence of 0.5±0.1 MIL and a maximum possible loss of zero of 1 MIL after 1000 shots.

The integrated activation button for the LS-FL5 is conveniently located for thumb activation, given the current doctrine for this kind of devices that indicates they should be installed above the barrel rather than to one side.

The Laserspeed LS-FL5 multifunction laser device is IP68 certified from factory against dust, water, and moisture, it will remain operational at extreme temperatures (-20°C/+55°C, or -4 to 131°F) and has been tested in factory to withstand recoil up to 1,200 G – which is the recoil level of .50 BMG, or 12.7×99mm NATO, fired from a heavy machine-gun or a semi-automatic, short-recoil operated rifle such as the Barrett M82-A1.

This means that the Laserspeed LS-FL5 will not only withstand the recoil of standard military small arms and modern hunting, sport shooting and personal defense rifles – we tried it with 5.56×45mm, 7.62×51mm and 7.62×39mm platforms without as much as a hiccup – but will also resist the hard recoil of long-range, high-caliber rifles.

The LS-FL5 is sold in a kit that includes adjustment and cleaning tools, a soft pouch, rubberized caps, and a remote switch with a 38cm-long cable

In professional, military or law enforcement applications, an infrared laser and illuminator installed on a sniper, spotter or marksman rifle can be used to guide allied units and fire towards a specific target. While the Laserspeed LS-FL5 will not be powerful enough to be used as a targeting device for beam-riding munitions such as rockets, missiles, or precision artillery, it can certainly provide visual guidance for mortar crews, pilots, and land units equipped with night vision devices.

As of today, the Laserspeed LS-FL5 is not distributed officially in Europe by a single importer. The Company is looking for reliable distributors, and is willing to provide OEM and ODM services.

Customers who want to purchase Laserspeed products from western Countries can do so directly on the official eBay Laserspeed store, where the LS-FL5 sight is sold at a retail price of US$915,00, which may be high for a commercial-grade laser and light combo but is actually on the low tier for a professional, multifunction device.
