Officially announced on March 11, the new Mossberg 590 Bliksem is a pump-action, 12-gauge "firearm" developed in collaboration with MOD - The Ministry Of Defence – this being, not the British Ministry of Defense proper but the brand established by none other than Christian Craighead, the former British 22nd SAS Special Forces operator who rose to global fame in January 2019 when he barged in solo in the DusitD2 complex in Nairobi, Kenya, to stop a bloody terror attack by Al-Shabaab militants, eliminating several all by himself and saving countless innocent lives.

The Mossberg 590 Bliksem will be a limited edition model, dedicated to both the collectors' market and to home, personal, and property defense as well as to private security operators, based on the tried-and-true Mossberg 590 design and built around a solid aluminum alloy receiver, a 5-shells magazine tube, and a heavy-walled 14.375" / 36,7 cm barrel with a bead front sight.

The action of the Mossberg 590 Bliksem is based on a solid twin action bar, and the polymer, "Corn Cob" style forend is finished in flat dark earth and features Mossberg's signature ribbed slip-proof surface along with a custom leather strap. The 3"/76mm chamber is protected by a full steel-on-steel lockup, ensuring maximum solidity and safety even with the hottest loads.

The working system of the 590 Bliksem is further guaranteed by Mossberg's signature double extractor and anti-jam elevator, and offers one of the smoothest-running actions on the global pump-action shotguns markets

The Mossberg 590 Bliksem features a bird's head style polymer grip with a black top strap, a rear QD sling swivel cup and a full slip-proof finish, ensuring a firm grip in all conditions while at the same time helping to tame heavy recoil.

The Bird's head grip also removes the Mossberg 590 Bliksem from the SBS (Short Barrel Shotguns) category, identified by the 1932 National Firearms Act and including any smooth-bore long gun "originally designed to be fired from the shoulder" and featuring a barrel shorter than 46 cm / 18".

As the Bird's Head grip doesn't allow the Mossberg 590 Bliksem to be fired from the shoulder, that makes it a generic Title 1 "Firearm", subject to State regulations and to background checks at the point of sale but not to the lengthy procedures tied to the ATF Form 1 (5320.1) tied to the purchase of NFA items.

Mostly everywhere else in the world, including in Europe, due to its overall length and barrel length, the Mossberg 590 Bliksem (and all similar firearms) would simply be considered shotguns, and – depending from local laws and regulations – not subject to any particular restriction other than those that apply to other firearms.

Standing at 67 cm / 26.37" in overall length, and weighing in at 2,8 kilograms (6.3 lbs) when empty, the new Mossberg 590 Bliksem is made unique by its full Rhodesian Brushstroke Cerakote camo finish that covers all outer metal surfaces – the receiver, magazine tube, and barrel – which not only adds to the character of this iconic firearm but also makes the action even smoother and protects all surfaces from scratches, wear, corrosion, and aggressive external elements, ensuring years of reliability even in the harshest conditions.

Other features of the Mossberg 590 Bliksem include a top-tang sliding safety; a top MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for optics; an Esscam flat dark earth six-shots cordura shell holding card secured to the left side of the receiver by hook-and-loop; and a convenient clean-out magazine tube screw-off cap for easier maintenance, also featuring a front loop for sling rings.

Mossberg's new 590 Bliksem 12-gauge pump-action "firearm"/shotgun will be available on the US market only for a limited time, at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $728.00.
