Springfield Armory XD Mod.4, the fourth generation striker-fired pistol
Springfield Armory announces the fourth generation of the XD line of no-frills striker-fired, polymer frame pistols for service and defensive purposes
On March 24, Springfield Armory announced the launch of the XD Mod.4 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol on the US market.
The XD Mod.4 represents the fourth generation of the single-action striker-fired, polymer frame semi-automatic pistols series manufactured in Croatia by HS Produkt since the end of the 1990s and distributed in north America and in numerous other Countries worldwide by Springfield Armory since 2002 – a line that has since evolved in dozens of variants and has enjoyed a strong market success, winning numerous accolades including the "Gun of the year" title or similar awards by several publications in the US no less than six times.
Exalted by some as a pinnacle in striker-fired handguns design, maligned and berated by others, the Springfield Armory XD pistol – or HS Produkt as it is sold in Europe – has its market success speak for itself, having been adopted by countless military and law enforcement agencies in no less than twenty Countries worldwide and being one of the top-selling service pistols for private security, a testament of its overall good technical layout.
As of today, the fourth generation XD pistol is only available in a 9mm Luger version, feeding through detachable double-stack steel magazines with a polymer floorplate and elevator. The magazines are compatible with the previous generation XD pistols, and are available in 16-rounds and 10-rounds variants depending on local laws and regulations.

Compared to the previous iterations of the Springfield XD design, the new XD Mod.4 is a no-frills upgrade that keeps the platform to a basic level, retaining the instinctive ease of use, technical simplicity and rugged reliability that made the XD series so successful.
The black reinforced polymer frame is roughly the same as that of the XD Mod.3 introduced back in 2025, featuring a more ergonomic grip with front finger grooves and aggressively textured slip-proof front and back straps (but with no trace of the XD Mod.2's infamous "Grip Zone" that raised some eyebrows back in 2015 when it was first launched); other features include an integrally-molded MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for accessories on the dust cover; a rounded, serrated trigger guard; and a higher-profile, easier to use grip safety.
The only other manual safety system on the XD Mod.4, aside from the grip safety, is the "Glock-style" safety blade integral to the flat-face trigger. The magazine release button on the XD Mod.4 is ambidextrous, while the slide stop and takedown levers are both located only on the left side of the frame.
Like all previous Springfield XD design incarnations, the XD Mod.4 also comes with a visual and tactile striker status indicator that protrudes from the endcap when the striker is cocked, and a loaded chamber indicator located just behind the ejection port.
The slide of the XD Mod.4 pistol is CNC-machined out of forged steel, and is protected from corrosion, scratches, aggressive elements, and general wear and tear by a solid QPQ (Melonite) matte black treatment. It is also slightly tapered and features deeper, wider and more aggressive front and rear serrations.
Sights-wise, the Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 pistol comes with a dovetailed front red fiber optic sight and two white dot rear sight; it also features Springfield Armory's own OSP (Optical Sight Pistol) machined red dot sight interface, allowing the use of adapter plates to mount any micro red dot sight with a Trijicon RMR, Docter or Leupold DeltaPoint Pro footprint.
The Springfield XD Mod.4 pistol features a 101mm / 4" barrel and a dual recoil spring that's captive on a full length rod whose front portion protrudes from the front of the slide in a prominent "plug" like surface that dubs as a stand-off device, preventing the gun from going off-battery if fired at point-blank range.
Standing at 185,4 mm / 7.3" in overall length and weighing in at 765 grams (27 oz) when empty, the new Springfield Armory XD Mod.4 pistol is sold on the US market at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $399.00 – in line with the well-known affordability of the XD series.
